How to Apply for Social Security

Apply for social security benefits at this link https://www.ssa.gov/apply and provide the requested information.

Social Security benefits are monthly payments from the government.
They help people who are:

  • Retired

  • Disabled

  • A surviving spouse or child of someone who passed away

The program is run by the Social Security Administration.

How Does It Work?

  • While you work, money is taken out of your paycheck.

  • That money goes into the Social Security system.

  • Later in life, you may receive monthly payments.

Who Can Get It?

You may qualify if:

  • You worked and paid into Social Security for many years.

  • You are usually age 62 or older (for retirement benefits).

  • You have a disability that prevents you from working.

  • You are a spouse or child of someone who qualified.

How Much Do You Get?

The amount depends on:

  • How long you worked

  • How much you earned

  • The age you start collecting benefits

If you start later (closer to age 70), your monthly payment is usually higher.
