What is Social Security Supplemental Income?

Social Security Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that provides monthly payments to people who have low income and limited resources and meet at least one of these conditions:

  • Are age 65 or older
  • Are blind
  • Have a qualifying disability
  • Are a child with a disability or blindness

SSI helps cover basic needs like food, clothing, and housing. It’s run by the Social Security Administration, but it’s different from Social Security retirement or disability benefits, which are based on work history. SSI does not require a work history.
