What is a Colonoscopy and When Do I Need One?

A colonoscopy is a test that lets doctors look inside your colon using a thin, flexible tube with a camera. It helps screen for colorectal cancer, find polyps, and check for other gut problems.

During the test, doctors can remove polyps or take small samples for testing. People at average risk should start screening at age 45. After the exam, treatment may include removing polyps, taking medicine, or making lifestyle changes. Talk with your doctor to decide which test is best for you and how often you should have it.
