What is an Eating Disorder and How to Get Help

An eating disorder is a serious mental health condition. It happens when someone’s thoughts and behaviors about food, body weight, or shape become unhealthy and extreme. This can include eating too little, overeating, or using harmful ways to control weight. Eating disorders can affect both the mind and body and may become life-threatening if not treated.

How to Get Help

Eating disorders can be treated. Support may include:

  • Talking with a therapist
  • Working with doctors and nutrition experts
  • Taking medication if needed
